Dealing with a sick baby

Its that time of year again when the sniffles will reach an all-time high.  There will be sneezing and coughing everywhere you go. It’s a scary time. Its an even scarier thought, that your little one will likely become a victim of all those illnesses flying around. Sadly enough, you’ll probably experience dealing with a sick baby, especially at this time of year.

Dealing with a sick baby is probably going to be some of the scariest moments of your life. Any other scary experience that you’ve had before will pale in comparison.

If you’re not a paediatrician, trust me, there will be times when you’re going to wish that you were. It’ll be those times when you’ll wonder why wasn’t your degree in pediatric care? You’ll convince yourself that your four years of college were completely wasted on something that doesn’t seem very necessary anymore.

You’ll especially feel this way if and when you find yourself dealing with a sick baby. When she cries through her coughs, or when she doesn’t smile as much anymore because her little body is fighting whatever sickness as best as it possibly can.

You’ll feel utterly helpless and all the snuggles in the world don’t seem to be making your baby better. But I think I speak for your little one when I say give as many snuggles as you possibly can. Because as much as you might not be able to tell, snuggles do help in making your baby feel a thousand times better. Even if they can’t really say it yet.

But also, don’t hesitate to call or send a message to your child’s doctor. If they get tired of you, or if they become more familiar with you more than they once were, then that’s a good sign. Follow their advice, give your baby the prescribed medicines in their correct doses and before you know it, your baby will be a giggling ball of cuteness once more.

After the million checks that I’m sure you’ll make to ensure that your baby is one hundred per cent over the sickness, I’m giving you the permission to plop down under those covers and take a breather. You’ll need to recover.

One piece of advice that I’m sure you’ll hear from your doctor is to give your baby plenty of fluids (if they’re at that age), especially water. This is especially good for them if they have a cold, the flu or even a chest infection.

Throughout it all, you’ll probably still feel helpless. You’ll probably feel unsure of what you’re doing or if you’re actually helping your baby to feel better. But in all of it, trust your motherly instincts. If you once thought that you didn’t have it, trust me, you do and it’ll show up when you need it most.

You can always reach out to me whenever you need to. It always helps if you talk with someone that you can relate to.
