The Munchkin Steam Guard Electric Sterilizer does exactly what it was made to do. It sterilizes baby products very well, which gives you one less thing to worry about as a mother. We all know how sensitive babies can be, especially newborns, therefore, sterilizing baby bottles, pacifiers, etc, I believe, is absolutely necessary.
Even though I nursed most of the time, when my baby turned six months old, I did introduce her to formula feeding. This meant that I needed clean bottles. Boiling water to sterilize those items seemed incredibly inconvenient and would cause us to use more gas than normal. That was a no, no. “Ain’t nobody got time for that.” Additionally, I needed as much time as I could get during my day, so this seemed like a good product for me.
So, I asked my husband to buy a Munchkin Electric Sterilizer, and he did. It worked great. I had zero issues with it. I especially appreciated the fact that it modelled a high capacity in that, it could hold up to 9 bottles at a time. Additionally, the lid height is also pretty high, which means that you can stack a bunch of other accessories without facing challenges to close the lid. Doing more than one cycle would be time-consuming, so I would stack everything in the sterilizer and it still closed pretty easily.
I also really appreciate that after a cleaning cycle, it would automatically turn itself off. I didn’t have to worry about leaving the sterilizer on or causing a hazard. And with the mom brain that I have now, that would have been a definite possibility.
While that is a plus, one might say that it can also be the downfall of this product. The button on the Munchkin Electric Sterilizer only turns it on, which means that you cannot manually turn it off. If by chance, the automatic turn off stops working, then the only way to stop it would be to plug the whole thing out. This can be dangerous if for example one is not in the same room with it.
I had come across one person who has said that the product malfunctioned after over a year of use. While doing a cleaning cycle, it did not turn off automatically and as such the circuit got burned. Luckily, she was in the same room and had managed to plug it out before anything else happened. She told me that she had not cleaned it as she should have, as she had left one cycle’s water in it for more than a few days. For that time, she had only attempted to clean it when she needed it. So I am not sure if that had something to do with it.
Once instructions are followed though, especially as it relates to care and cleaning, it should be fine.
If you do plug it in and see the light on in the switch button, then assume that something is wrong with it as it should only turn on when you manually do so.
It also cleans easily by initially using vinegar in one cycle and water in the next. If you do use vinegar, have an open window or door so that you have an inflow of fresh air coming in. The vinegar scent can be very overpowering.
Munchkin boasts that this electric bottle sterilizer is natural and highly efficient as it is able to kill 99% of bacteria. It also completes one cleaning cycle pretty fast as it can do so in 6 minutes. I didn’t test that specific time, but it did seem quite fast to me.
Watch out though! It does get pretty hot. So, before you attempt to open the lid and remove the items, give it a few minutes to cool off.
All in all, I believe that the Munchkin Electric Sterilizer is a pretty good product. It is not an overachiever, but it gets the job done.
