Mothers’ Day is the one day, out of 365 days within a year, where mothers and motherhood are celebrated worldwide.
All in all, a wonderful sentiment!
Sorry to burst all y’all bubbles though, but you (we) may have had it wrong all along. Mothers, some times (most times) don’t like the gifts they receive on mothers’ day.
You’re probably thinking, “FYI, my mother loved all the gifts I’ve ever given her.” Hmmm. Maybe. Maybe Not.
I know, this may be hard to digest, but, she probably didn’t.
She appreciated the effort/sentiment, but probably not the vacuum cleaner that you bought her for mothers’ day. She didn’t like it because you see, that’s something that will benefit the house and not her. She’s probably the one who will end up using it to clean the house anyway. So no, she probably didn’t like it.
She probably didn’t like that plant either. Why? Well, because, (how to put this nicely) its something else to take care of. (I know, I’m not supposed to say things like that, especially before Mothers’ day)
And no, she definitely DID NOT like the plunger. Trust me on that one.
Do we like to be showered with certain gifts (Thoughtful Gifts) and get pampered? Yes, definitely.
But, do we actually want a big whoop? Surrounded by tons of people? Not really.
Mothers’ Day gifts are Appreciated
Don’t get it twisted, as mothers, we appreciate every single effort that most of you put into trying to make mothers’ day special for us. Especially the hugs.
I mean, it feels good to be recognized for basically being superhuman. #NotHumble
For packing the lunches, or cooking and cleaning. For washing that huge new pile of clothes even though laundry was done yesterday. Getting the “I hate you’s’ screamed at you but definitely crying over it later.
For getting up 57 million times to go somewhere that your almost-two-year-old wants to take you. Even if she just wanted you to stand there and watch her do something she thought was spectacular. For reading the same page 300 times. And doing it again because she loved it so much.
Gifts given on Mothers’ Day are for all those things and so much more! (In case you weren’t sure) And we appreciate it! We really do!
However, there is something else that we’d really like.
So, what’s the ultimate gift to give any mother on mothers’ day?
The truth is, as mothers, especially those whose children are still pretty young, we just want to sit down in the couch, or bed, or wherever we like to relax, have our favourite comfort foods, have the tv on our favourite channel and not be bothered.
We’d like to have our meals, or even a meal, without getting up to do something for everyone else while our food gets cold.
It’s simple, as mothers, we just want to remember what it feels like to sit by ourselves and not move, for anything, or anyone. At least for a few hours because asking for a whole day may be asking for too much. (The house may not survive).
We’d like the opportunity to sleep in until we feel like its time to get out of bed.
We’d love the chance to eat something and not share it.
That’s it. That’s all we want. At least, that’s all I’d want.
That’s the ultimate gift to give any mother on mothers’ day!
A Word of Advice
So, a word of advice from a mother, don’t go spending a lot of money on gifts for your mother on mothers’ day. Instead, think, no, I mean, really think about what your mother would really want. When you come up with an answer, let her have it and I promise you, she’ll have the biggest smile on her face. She may even tear up.
Show some appreciation to her, even if you don’t get along with her very well. Because, the truth is, you’ll never truly know all the things she went through for you. Or even the things she gave up for you.
Because, here’s the thing and I’m sure most of you have already figured this out, motherhood isn’t easy. Whether or not the role has been played the way you would have prefered it.
Sometimes mothers are forced to make decisions that aren’t exactly black and white. Decisions that were ultimately made for their loved one’s benefit. Even when its hard to see that.
You see, mothers do what they think is best, how they think its best, even if sometimes it doesn’t turn out to be the best.
To Mothers
To all the mothers out there, HAPPY MOTHERS’ DAY! I hope that each and every one of you has someone who is willing to spoil you and give you a gift or treatment that you actually want!
You are unbelievable and remarkable! But most of all, always remember, You’re Doing Great Mamma!
